Travel Log: Dipping in the Rainy Hot Springs

Destination: Sungai Klah Hot Springs
Date: February 18, 2012

In all my life, I’ve never heard of Sungai Klah Hot Springs until 3 weeks ago. Apparently Malaysia has its very own natural hot springs too! So peeps, you can save your air tickets money to Taiwan or Japan and just spend RM12 on Sungai Klah Hot Springs instead.

Our journey started with confusion – apparently when you key in Sungai Klah Hot Spring into Google Map or GPS, you get 2 locations:
1)      Sungai Klah Hot Spring Park at Kuala Kangsar (1 ½ hour away from Penang)
2)      Felda Residence Hot Springs at Sungai Klah (2 ½ hour away from Penang)
So which is the correct destination? Since we’ve read that it takes 1 ½ hours to get from KL to this place, we assume that it would be a 2 ½ hours journey from Penang. Thank God we were right! So if you are starting your trip from Penang, choose the further location! Else I really have no idea what you might see in Sungai Klah Hot Spring Park at Kuala Kangsar.. *sweat*
Kuala Kangsar?! NOPE!
When in doubt, take the longer route! *evil grin*
Before we started our journey, we had our breakfast at Juru’s Subway. The counter staff that day really outdid himself! You won’t believe how much vegetable he managed to put in our sub. Not just lettuce but everything! Even olive was a big handful! Can Subway hire more guys like him?
Subway Sandwich with tons of vege and olives!
It was around 11.30am when we arrived at the park. You have to park your car at the entrance, buy the ticket (RM12 per adult) before getting picked up by tram to get into the hot springs area.
Finally Arrive!
The Map!
The Tram!
We first arrived at the Therapeutic pool area. There were like 3 major Therapeutic pools there with temperature signboard to tell you how hot each pool was. Some We’d decided to dip at the shaded 30-35 degree Celsius pool. In order to enjoy the optimum health effects on the pool, you have to dip in the pool for 30minutes. You might think: 30 minutes? No problemo! But the truth was: It was hot when you first stepped in, then you got used to it and you sit there saying: it is not that hot! After 10 minutes, your sweat started to drip nonstop and you felt like being cooked alive slowly. We wondered whether it was because of the 12noon sunny weather or it was because the Therapeutic pool was accelerating our metabolism for weight lost. Let’s hope it was the second option!
How many kg can i lose if i dip in this for 30 mins?
If you are a thrill seeker, you might want to try out the reflexology path with hot spring water. If you think walking on reflexology path is bad, try walking it in hot spring water. Come to think about it, it might not be that bad since your feet are already cooked enough to have less reaction to the stony path. Oh ya, there was also an unlabeled pool there – you are encourage to try it out! You might be able to sue the park for safety negligence for a big sum of money. That is if you don’t mind getting boiled alive. Btw, we did test it with our foot.. *facepalm*
The Deadly Path...
The Deadly Unlabeled Pool!
After the never-ending 30minutes dip in the 30-35degree Celsius pool, we went to the hot spring pool to get a look. It was a beach-like pool with artificial waterfalls surrounding it. You would sit under the “waterfall” for the water to pour on your whole body. The hot spring was of course HOT! Now I started to wonder why in the world anyone would want to dip in a hot springs in such a sunny Malaysian weather! It was actually not that sunny when we were there but the heat really makes us uncomfortable. In fact, you would feel dizzy if you dip in there for too long.
Sammy wants a dip too!
Hot Spring Pool - the "waterfall" is at the back...
That’s when we found that the giant vase near the pool was our savior. There was cold spring water inside the vase for visitor to cool themselves down. Once we started to pour ourselves with the cold water, we just couldn’t stop! We just kept pouring and pouring like taking a bath in front of everyone. *facepalm* I think the others must thought us crazy!
SAVIOR!!!
Like a Wetdog after Cold Spring Water Pouring...
By that time the sun was hiding behind the cloud and it looked like it was going to rain. We’d decided to do the ‘egg boiling’ in hot spring thing 1st before the rain started to pour down. Our egg got cooked in 10 minutes time and this was our lunch along with Gardenia Ikan Bilis Bun. The rain started to pour once we finished our lunch. But this did not stop us! *heroic theme*
Becoming a Chef!
Egg: HELP!!!
Lunch: Ikan Bilis Bun & Egg...
We ran to cold spring pool in the rain and totally enjoyed ourselves. The water of this pool is from mountain spring water. There were only a handful of people there and we got to stand underneath the artificial waterfall for a long long time. The high velocity water was hitting our shoulder and back forcefully – it was better than any massage! Perhaps we could call this a natural Jacuzzi massage?
The "Waterfall" Massaging Spot - Photo taken before the rain...
Another Part of Cold Spring Pool - Photo taken before the rain...
The rain kept pouring and the weather was getting really cold. That was when we left the cold spring pool with cold breeze blowing on us. That’s when we decided to go to the hot spring pool again. It must be serendipity but when we reached the hot spring pool, there were fog all above the pool – it looked like those Japanese or Taiwanese hot spring pool (well, at least how it looked like on TV since I’d never seen one myself). Wow! What a good fortune! We actually managed to see and dip in a hot springs surrounded by fog in Malaysia! Unfortunately we did not manage to take a photo of it as our camera was not with us due to raining.

The experience of dipping in the hot spring pool in a raining and cold environment was totally different from our earlier sweaty experience. Now I understand why people love to go hot springs in Japan/Taiwan since they normally have cold weather. The experience was surreal and we sat under the hot waterfall (this time hot natural Jacuzzi massage) for quite some time before calling it a day.
Last Photo before Leaving.. See the weather?
The Fog at the Hot Spring Pool somehow looks like this..
So is this place fun?  Well I guess it really depends on the weather and your preference. If you enjoy dipping on a pool for a day, this is the place for you! There were basically no other activities here other than pool dipping. Strange it might sound but I think that this place is more suitable for rainy day! You can’t really enjoy the hot spring that much if it was a sunny hot day unless you plan to spent most of your time in the cold spring pool in a hot spring park. =p

It was almost 7pm when we reached Juru to grab our dinner at Isshin Japanese Restaurant. This was our first time dining in this restaurant since we normally dine on the island itself. We ordered the Salmon with egg rice set (RM18) and Unagi with egg rice set (RM26). We were served with appetizer – some vermicelli with carrots and vegetable. We were amazed when our main course was served – the bowl was so big and it was full of salmons! Basically the salmon covered the top part of the bowl until we couldn’t see the rice beneath! It tasted yummy too! Totally worth the RM18. The Unagi given was also quite a lot as well. The only downside of the main courses was there were too many onions. But it was there to give extra sweet taste to the set in overall. Highly recommended to try this out (especially the salmon with egg rice set) if you happen to be in Juru Autocity.
It's Dinner Time!

Voucher Food Hunt: Annabelle’s Place

This is a way overdue blog as we visited Annabelle’s Place at December 2011. I was a bit worried when I bought this groupon as the redemption period was quite short but went ahead to purchase it due to the overwhelming review of this place in the cyberspace.

[48% Off] Pasta Main Course + Soup for RM13 instead of RM25 at Annabelle’s Place. Choose Bolognese, Carbonara or Aglio Olio. Limited Groupons
http://www.groupon.my/deals/penang/annabelles-place/715860410

The restaurant looked so exquisite and well decorated. Since the deal didn’t include drink, we ordered the drink separately – Iced Lemon Tea and Anna Banana! I must say this was the best choice that we could choose. Anna Banana was totally Bananaly heavenly BANANA until I went totally BANANA! It’s basically banana milkshake but it was so yummy that I still crave for it today. I guess it had the right combination of banana and milk as it was not too thick but not too watery with a very smooth texture.
Merry Christmas! Oops.. It's February now..
Nice Deco...
BANANA! BANANA!! BANANA!!!
We were then served with our soup – a pumpkin soup and a mushroom soup. Both were thick and homemade.
Mushroom & Pumpkin Soup
Our main courses were Fettuccine Carbonara and Spicy Seafood Spaghetti. The Fettuccine Carbonara was thick and creamy but a bit too dry for me – I love my Fettuccine Carbonara a bit wetter instead. But I think I did read that Fettuccine Carbonara was not supposed to be too wet. Guess it’s my weird taste then. *facepalm*
Fettuccine Carbonara
I have nothing but praise for the Spicy Seafood Spaghetti though. The sauce was simply so great! It was light and I guess I kind of hoped that the portion was bigger! I don’t usually like aglio olio style spaghetti but this one blew my mind.
Spicy Seafood Spaghetti Aglio Olio
Annabelle’s Place is located at Lebuh Lembah Permai 4 shoplot, Tanjung Bungah, Penang. It’s not that easy to find it if you are not familiar with the Lebuh Lembah Permai area. In fact, we called the shop for direction when we were lost on the way there.

Voucher Food Hunt: NextStop

NextStop is a new fast food chain which started to blossom in Penang since last year. So far I’ve seen the shop at a few shopping malls. Their signature is to have a bus shape stall. From what I gathered, it was opened by Pacific West Company which produces frozen fish fillet and other frozen seafood. Guess the idea is: since we have the raw material, let’s cook it and sell as finished goods! =p

Their menu is mainly fish and seafood as this is what Pacific West produces. Now they have soft shell crab as well and they are selling it in ezivoucher. Since I’m addicted to soft shell crab, I bought the voucher without second thought. *facepalm*

[48%] Soft Shell Crab Set Promotion for RM8.80 instead of RM16.90 Only At NextStop.
http://www.ezivoucher.com/deals/Next-Stop

The best thing about this voucher is no reservation is needed and it’s applicable everyday – including public holiday! Another best part is take-away is allowed! My colleagues were wondering whether the portion of the crab would be a miserable piece but I didn’t really care at that point.

So on a random day, we walked in to Next Stop at 1st avenue to redeem our vouchers. We also purchased an additional mango sorbet which cost only RM5.90. So far this is the cheapest price we’ve seen of this sorbet as normally other restaurant charges higher than this. If I’m not mistaken, Ingolf’s Kneipe sold this at RM10.80. Perhaps Pacific West produces this sorbet thus having a lower cost? Anyway, the sorbet is great as ever. I love this sorbet but the funny thing is I never know what its brand is.
Now only i know it's called Island Way!
Yummy Sorbet!
We were served with our soft shell crab with chips and soft drinks after some waiting as they only fry the food after ordering from customer (order to make!) – this differentiates Next Stop from other fast food chains which provides pre-prepared items. We were shocked when we saw the portion – they gave a very generous portion of soft shell crab (1 ½ crabs per set) and chips! Well it’s greasy but it was to be expected since it was fried food. The soft shell crab was crispy on the outside but full of meat and juicy on the inside. The chips were similar to Nando’s chips – yummy! By the way, do request tartar sauce from them as it complimented the food very well. A very fulfilling (FAT!) meal indeed. =)
Look at the size of the crab!
Another big set!
Next Stop is located 1st Avenue, Gurney Plaza & Sunway Carnival in Penang.

Voucher Food Hunt: Bella Italia – Batu Ferringhi

I’ve been to Bella Italia in Pulau Tikus for a few times and fall in love with their fettuccine Carbonara and pizza pepperoni. In fact, we ordered the same food the last few times we were there. So when I saw this voucher, my breath was hitched and I felt like my heart has stopped! The price offered was simply amazing as I’ve experienced the original price with similar or exact same order. The only different was – this is their Batu Ferringhi branch.
My favourite Pepperoni & Cheese from Bella Italia, Pulau Tikus
My beloved Fettuccine Carbonara from Bella Italia, Pulau Tikus
[46%Off] Enjoy a Romantic Italian Dinner with your loved one at Bella Italia for only RM49.90 instead of RM92.80 (2 pax)
http://www.ezivoucher.com/deals/Bella-Italia

For this voucher, you can choose:-
- 1 type of appetizer (garlic bread or bruschetta)
- 2 main courses (Pizza or/and Pasta)
- 2 drinks

After lots of twist and turns on the road, we finally reached Batu Ferringhi without any puking incident. Bella Italia in Batu Ferringhi is basically an al fresco restaurant without air condition – the restaurant only has some fans inside. It was quite a pain since the temperature was quite high on the windless night. There were a lot of foreign tourists there during our visit though.
Lemon Squash & Blackcurrent Squash
We had the bruschetta as appetizer – we were served 2 pieces of the bruschetta rather than the 4 pieces if we ordered it with original price. Anyway, it tasted good as always.
Bruschetta
Since we are using the voucher, we’ve decided to try some new main courses rather than order our favourite items. Thus we ordered Spaghetti Aglio Oilo and Sicilian Pizza. Spaghetti Aglio Oilo is the most basic of Italian Pasta with chili, extra virgin olive oil and flat parsley. The spaghetti served was al dente and nice to munch at. It tasted quite nice considering the minimum ingredients that were involved. I would prefer it to be a bit spicier though. =p
Spaghetti Aglio Olio
The Sicilian Pizza consists of anchovies, garlic, broccoli florets, black olives, tomato sauce Mozzarella cheese and extra virgin olive oil. This is my 1st time eating a pizza with broccoli and anchovies on top. =p So how would I describe it? Hmm… the pizza crust was thin and crispy at the outer corner as Italian pizza would be, the topping taste was really special – a bit salty near to anchovies part but overall it’s really a unique taste. I quite enjoyed it to be honest until I wolfed down half of the pizza. There goes my diet plan! *facepalm*
Sicilian Pizza
Anyway, I would prefer their Pulau Tikus branch as it’s nearer to town and it provides air condition! But I think the food quality is quite similar between the branches though. They are famous for their tiramisu as well.

Bella Italia is located at either Batu Ferringhi opposite Rasa Sayang Hotel, or in Belissa Row at Pulau Tikus, Penang.

Voucher Food Hunt: Jade Blossom Restaurant – 1st Avenue

I’ve always heard good comment about Jade Blossom in Krystal Point on their great food quality but with a higher price. However, I’ve never experienced it myself so when I see that their counterpart in 1st avenue is selling this voucher, I just couldn’t resist it. I’m not too sure both branches have the same menu though.

[40.15% off ] Taste the true cantonese cuisine! A choice of 3 delicious cuisines only for RM7.90 instead of RM13.20 @ Jade Blossom Restaurant
http://www.ezivoucher.com/deals/Jade-Blossom

There are 3 choices per voucher – dumpling noodle, soft shell crab fried rice & fried noodles. Since we bought 3 vouchers, we ordered all the 3 choices to sample the taste. The funny thing about our visit was there was a wedding dinner starting at 7.30pm thus they asked us to get there by 6pm. But by the time we got there, the wedding couple had already arrived! We were like: Huh? So excited to get married? =p
Look! Here is a wedding!
Our table was directly opposite the reception table but shaded by trees...
Anyhoo, during all the panic and confusion of the busy waitress, we managed to get our food and left before the wedding guests arrived. Our 1st dish was the dumpling noodle. There were 3 huge dumplings with prawn and meat inside. Eventhough the website says there should be sharkfin in there – I just didn’t see any. All in all, it was quite okay and the soup tasted of mushroom.
The Shrimp Dumpling Noodle
Look at this! =)
They then served us the fried noodle – the noodle had 3 prawns on top and it was quite nice but a bit oily though. I think they put in some sesame oil for seasoning.
Fried Noodle
Last but not least, the soft shell crab fried rice finally arrived. I was actually anticipating this dish as I was addicted to soft shell crab recently. But I was saddened as the crab was in small piece (1/2 crab). However, I did love the fried rice – it tasted like Nestum! You know like fried Nestum Prawns? I love Nestum in a dish! So either they recycle the oil used to fry the Nestum Prawn for the wedding dinner, or they really add Nestum into the fried rice! I do hope it’s the latter! Maybe I should try to cook fried rice with Nestum myself. =p
Soft Shell Crab Fried Rice - Love the Nestum taste!
There are 2 branches of Jade Blossom Restaurant – 1 in Krystal Point and another in 1st Avenue, Penang.

Italiannies is in Town!

Italiannies finally opened its 1st restaurant in Gurney Paragon! I had the pleasure of dining in their KL Mid-valley branch years ago and now I finally can dine there without going to KL. The restaurant was full when we went on a Friday night and we had to wait around 20 minutes to get a table.

We were served by a waiter who didn’t really speak English well, he is a foreigner from the look of it. We wanted to order stuffed mushroom and lasagna, but were told 10 minutes later that both dishes were not available. We ended ordering Sicilian Chicken Salad and Chicken Milanese. We also ordered a glass of red Sangria and this was when the thing got funny. After we ordered it, the waiter came back to clarify with us on this order again, the conversation went like:
Waiter: You ordered White Sangria?
Me: No, I ordered RED Sangria.
Waiter: White?
Me: RED.
Waiter: White?
Me: No. I want RED!
Waiter: White?
Me: RED!
This went on for quite a long time.
Me: RED! Okay?
Waiter: Okay okay!
*the waiter walked away*
Me: *bewildered* I think he is going to serve me white Sangria instead…

My instinct was right - he served me white Sangria! UGH! Perhaps I can’t pronounce “RED” properly? The funny thing was the restaurant manager was suddenly there to ask us about the waiter performance – saying he is a new guy and hopefully did not screw anything up. I did not complain the waiter to her since I was in a good mood that night (after watching Tom Hiddleston in War Horse on big screen) and because it was quite an amusing situation really. The WHITE Sangria tasted good anyway and perhaps the waiter had indirectly helped me by serving me the lower calories of the 2 different Sangrias? =p
The Infamous White Sangria
Anyway, did I mention I love the bread, olive and vinegar served by Italiannies?
Bread with olive oil and vinegar - LOVE IT!
Luckily the waiter did not screw up our main courses and we were served with Sicilian Chicken Salad. The salad consisted of chicken breast, mangoes, red grapes, pine nuts and romaine lettuce with lemon-dijon dressing. The dressing tasted a bit garlicky actually but overall it was good.
Sicilian Chicken
The Chicken Milanese was served – basically it was 3 chicken breasts served with spinach and tomato. The chicken and spinach was soaked in some creamy sauce which was yummy. It was a bit sourly and buttery.
Chicken Milanese
I guess the only downside of the restaurant (other than that amusing waiter) was the choices in their menu were always out of stock. My colleagues had the same experience as their top choices were all sold out. Perhaps they could store more stock? Or they prefer to have limited stock for fresher ingredients?

Well, perhaps we should be glad that we didn’t waited for 1 hour before being informed that food are out of stock! Think that is bad? Wait till you got punched in the face by the waiter for expressing our lack of satisfaction! Think that’s the worst case it could happen? Wait till people mentioned that “worker is our asset, they have feeling! As a customer, you shouldn’t complain or scold the worker even after you were in queue for 1 hour and then was told the food is out of stock!” *sweat* You think things like that never happen? Well, think again! It happened right here in Malaysia in a KFC restaurant. Guess this is the new age of customer relationship management! Malaysia Boleh! *sacarsm* Anyway.. I digress…

Italiannies is located in Gurney Paragon, Penang.
