The Sushi Tei’s Diary

The story began in June 2013 with a RM10 voucher from Sushi Tei Facebook (link). Once we’d tried Sushi Tei that one time, we basically ‘demoted’ other sushi restaurant franchises. It’s our go-to everyday Japanese dining. In fact, our “attendance” was flawless in the sense that we visited almost every 2 weeks and we still haven’t finish tasting the entire menu. Do apply for the Sushi Tei member card if you are a regular to enjoy 10% discount. An important thing to highlight – Sushi Tei Gurney Plaza’s food quality is SO MUCH BETTER than the one in Queensbay. Do try to get to Gurney Plaza branch if possible!

We have two regular menu items that we ordered in every single visit – Soba & Ikura Cawanmushi.

I do not know what ingredients they put in the soba soup base, it’s just supposed to be soy sauce right? However, the soba soup base triumphs other chain Japanese restaurants by aeons!!! It was slightly sweet and salty at the same time and we won’t feel thirsty after eating this so it mustn’t be due to ajinomoto… the soba is served generous portion wakame (seaweed) along with it. The combination of this unassuming bowl of soba is surprisingly marvelous.

Gyuniku Soba (Soba with Beef)
As for Ikura Cawanmushi, the chef generously covers the steam egg surface with thick layer of Ikura (salmon roe). The feeling of the salty Ikura popping in your mouth along with smooth egg is simply irresistible! *sigh* did I mention that their cawanmushi texture is really really really smooth too?
Ikura Cawanmushi - Look at all the Salmon Roe!!
Plain Cawanmushi
Other than our 2 must-order items, we generally order something else in the menu to try out different food. Some of them we like but there are also some which we feel ‘meh’ and slash them off for next visit. Not everything here is perfect okay? =P

When you feel your waistline has thicken, you may want to try out the sashimi salad which is served with varieties of sashimi (generously too) such as salmon & tuna. You may choose the salad dressing from Sushi Tei dressing, wafu dressing, sesame dressing etc. I’ve always chose the Sushi Tei dressing since I like its sourly taste.

Kani & Avocado Salad
From the kaiten belt, our favourites are definitely salmon mentai sushi & salmon skin.
Salmon Mentai Sushi
Salmon Skin
Soft Shell Crab Maki
Occasionally they have this Salmon Pieces
Accidentally took the Chicken Skin instead of Salmon Skin.. Opps!
Deep Fried Salmon
We’ve also tried various version of ‘don’ from their menu – you may choose them by size for certain items such as ‘tendon’, ‘gyuniku don’ & ‘yakitori don’. The tempura from ‘tendon’ is really crispy but definitely not good to your diet plan. =P As for ‘gyuniku don’ & ‘yakitori don’, I still prefer the beef version as chicken can be too dry sometimes. However, I think both uses same sauce and it blends really well with rice. A tip – mix the rice with silky smooth cawanmushi too! YUMMY!!! Another rice that we won’t too keen about is the katsu-chicken rice, the chicken is full of fat and skin so it’s kind of yucky. *sweat*
Gyuniku Don
Salmon & Ikura Don - YUMMY!!!!
Tendon!
Yakitori Don
Tantan Don - Spicy Minced Meat Rice
Chicken Katsu Don - meh!
Hmm.. what else? The salmon maki with salmon skin inside is great and so is the ‘dragon maki’.

Deep Fried Tuna Maki
Dragon Maki - Tiger Prawn, Unagi & Avocado in one!
One of the Sushi Plate - Can't remember the name but it is forgettable anyway
Sashimi Plate!
Our New Discovery - a bit disappointed when served as the Roe given were very little as opposed to the menu picture but was pleasantly surprised by the thickness and the freshness of the Salmon! Thinking to re-order this!
Oh, they have other ala carte order as well.
Edamame
Miso Soup
Some Sea Stuff
Garlic Fried Rice - not that special actually
Giant Squid!
Tempura Ramen
They also offer seasonal menu and some of them are really great but discontinues after the season is over.. *pout* here are the photos of some of the items from seasonal menu.
Soft Shell Crab with Salted Egg Yolk! Hope they will have it forever!!!
Baby Sardine rice.. i'm addicted to Baby s\Sardine
Spider Roll with Soft-Shell Crab inside
Some Eel Rice
Another Seared Salmon Maki
Sushi Tei does offer set lunch menu on weekdays but so far I’ve only tried 2 of them. Frankly speaking? I still prefer the ala carte menu as the set can be too large and only partial of the set is nice.
Shoyu Ramen Set - the Maki tastes Weird..
Curry Spaghetti Set - just okay..
What else? Desserts! The green tea ice ream and black sesame ice cream are both yummylicious - and this is from someone who doesn't like black sesame ice cream. =P
Green Tea & Black Sesame Ice Cream
Yam Ice Cream
Sushi Tei has branches in Gurney Plaza & Queensbay mall in Penang Island. Food quality in Gurney Plaza is definitely better thus try get to that branch if possible.

Birthday Celebration: The Foodie Marathon (Part 2)

Is birthday cake a must for every birthday celebration? Personally I did not get any birthday cakes for yearssssssss – perhaps this is someone’s subtle hint on my ever expanding waistline? *pout* After few years of hinting.. Hmm guess whining is the more accurate description *facepalm*, there are finally cake involved (Hooray!!!) albeit not a full cake *deflated*.
It's a Conspiracy!!!
Passion Heart Café
Passion Heart Café is yet another café highly listed in Tripadvisor (link) specializing in cake (duh!). We went there during dinner time with empty stomach and ordered nutmeg drink, their famous hummingbird cake and a red wine cake.
They also serve Meal
Nutmeg Drink
The hummingbird cake was HUGE and packed full with nuts, fruits and cream cheese. In fact, 1 piece of hummingbird cake rendered us helpless since it was too filling even though we went on empty stomach! Between the hummingbird cake and red wine cake, I actually preferred the red wine cake – it was light and moist with a hint of red wine. YUMMY!!!
After two cakes, we were totally stuffed and unable to have any ‘real’ dinner anymore. So remember to order a lighter cake if you have little place to spare in your stomach. =)

Red Wine Cake
Since we did not have any ‘real’ dinner, we’ve decided to have a ‘real’ BRUNCH the day after which brought us to…

Pit Stop No. 12
I know, I know.. I’m late to the party – Pit Stop No. 12 (link) has been blogged to death for many years but this was actually my 1st time here. I’m outdated! =P
Brunch time!
We ordered a big breakfast and another plate of omelet with sausage. The place had nice ambience and the food did look nice and all but I guess the taste was just ordinary. Nothing to shout about there... but it was really nice to laze around in such environment in a weekend morning (or any morning!).

Birthday Celebration: The Foodie Marathon (Part 1)

They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, but do this applicable to woman as well? What if said man has no knowledge in cooking whatsoever? Well, that’s where RESTAURANTS come in – and you wonder why there are so many restaurants blooming around in Penang… you heard it here first! =)
I guess the way to a girl's heart is through her stomach too?
Thus on a birthday occasion, we parked our car in the small alley in Heritage site where all the tourists roamed.

Micke’s Places
Apparently Micke’s Place ranked quite high in tripadvisor (link) so we’d decided to give it a try. One thing that caught our attention was the graffiti on the wall & table – every corner was full of graffiti. Does this mean they promote vandalism? =P
Look at all the notes written by guests
Full everywhere
We ordered Ice Blended Passion Fruit & Banana and orange juice and they were both refreshing but nothing extraordinary.
The Drinks & Graffiti on Table
We ordered Mushroom Soup & Tandoori Chicken Wing as appetizer. The Tandoori chicken wings were awesome! We just couldn’t get enough of that - definitely a must-try in Micke’s. The Mushroom soup was just okay.

Tandoori Chicken Wings - Must Try!!!
For main course, we ordered the lamb chop with linguini and a sandwich which I couldn’t remember the name even my life depend on it. The lamb chop with linguini was nice but the same couldn’t be said for the unnamed sandwich (ironically, it’s a forgettable sandwich so I guess that’s the reason to forget the name?). The bread was really soggy and couldn’t hold the ingredients which were quite little I might say. The ingredient inside the sandwich was so meager until basically I’m eating half of the sandwich plain (or perhaps the bread was simply too LONG for the ingredients – it’s like a butter spread too thin). Definitely avoid this!

The Soggy Sandwich
This is the part with ingredients inside
During our dinner there, we did see another table of foreigners sent back some dishes to kitchen due to food being too spicy. All in all, if you like to chill out in a nice ambience with reasonable price (the price was actually quite cheap) – you might want to give this a try. =)

After the appetizers & main course in Micke’s Place, there seemed to be something missing – DESSERT of course! That was what brought us to…

All about Sugar & Gift
All about Sugar & Gift specialty is Tang Yuen (glutinous rice ball) and have been a go-to place for Tang Yuen Lovers. This was actually the first time we’d stepped into the shop. We ordered a bowl of peanut Tang Yuen with brown sugar soup base and another bowl of white fungus egg with Tang Yuen.
Nice Deco!
The verdict? I think Tang Yuen is at its best when it’s served traditionally! We definitely preferred the plain bowl of Peanut Tang Yuen with Brown Sugar with a hint of ginger. We loved it so much until we came back few times for takeout.
