Travel Log: A Premium Room with a Pool

Destination: Teluk Kumbar, Penang, Malaysia
Duration: 2 Days 1 Night (May 26~May 27, 2018)

This was the 2nd time we booked ourselves into Lexis Suites Penang since our stay in Sep 2016 (link). The hotel was having a roadshow in my office with Guaranteed Upgrade to Premium Pool Suite for RM350nett together with some other Buy 1 Free 1 buffet promotions. The catch was the room package only included breakfast for 1 and extra breakfast cost RM40/adult.

We managed to check in by 3pm and one thing we noticed was there were no welcome drink being served unlike our 1st visit. The Premium Pool Suite was supposed to be bigger than Executive Pool Suite with sea facing balcony. However, at 1st glance it seemed to be more cramped as the room was divided into half when we stepped through the front door. At the left would be the bedroom with 2 king size beds with door leading to balcony with pool. At the right was the gigantic bathroom with bathtub, rain shower and toilet. The swimming pool seemed to be same size as the one in Executive Pool Suite. The only difference was the bathroom with bathtub & rain shower was roomier and offered better view to the sea.

The kids were excited to go to the playland at 8th floor and it was free to enter by hotel guests this time. It was not as big as the playland at Golden Sands but did serve its purpose.

After a while, we finally got back to the room to enjoy the private pool. The water in the pool seemed to be extremely cold – I guess due to the cold weather during our stay. At the end we actually spent more time in the bathroom enjoying hot bubble bath than in the pool. One thing I did not like the Premium Pool Suite was the fact that you needed to walk through the whole length of bedroom from balcony to get into the bathroom. It made the bedroom floor wet especially when you were dripping wet from the pool. The feeling on stepping on wet floor in bedroom was definitely a pet peeve for me! One more thing to be improved - the toiletries design & quality seemed to be lower than expectation from a 5-star hotel. Perhaps some revamp is needed - go sample the one given by Pangkor Laut Resort or Hard Rock!

Let's have Bubble Hot Bath instead - using own Shower Gel as the one provided by hotel hardly has bubble...
Some Comparison of toiletries in different hotels...
At dinner, we drove out to Khunthai to enjoy some Thai Food. We totally over-estimated our appetite with orders of Pandan Chicken, Crisp Fried Kangkung, Seafood Tomyam, Claypot Glass Noodle, Deepfried Fishcake, Omelet & some fried hor fun. Our favourite was definitely the seafood tomyam & claypot glass noodle. Yum Yum!!! The fried Hor Fun seemed to be sour though, we were wondering whether it was supposed to taste like this or it was spoiled. =P

After the filling meal, we drove back to the hotel in the rain but did not go in the pool anymore as it got even colder. The lighting in the pool also didn’t seem to be working but we just let it be since we did not plan to go into the water anymore. However, it was actually a good weather to enjoy the steam room. A friend's advise is to apply hair conditioner to maximize the steam's benefit. =)

Since the breakfast was only for 1 pax, we’d decided to skip it all together and ate bread in our room instead. We utilized the pool & bathtub again before checking out at 12noon. We had no idea what to do and ended up at Saanen farmhouse again to play with some cute puppies and goats. We really loved the milk & ice cream but unfortunately there was no black sugar bun for sale this time. We drove past Half Acre restaurant before making a U-turn to have a look. Too bad the restaurant was full and we had no patience to wait. Thus this ended our super short getaway from reality. =P
Look at the Cute Puppy!!!!
I think the goat is hungry...

Anyway I ended up applying for RM888 Lexis Privilege Card since the benefit was really worth the price. The main benefit was of course the complimentary 1 night stay at Premium Pool Suite at Lexis Suites Penang with Breakfast (2 adults & 2 children) and another complimentary 1 night stay at Grand Pool Villa at Grand Lexis Port Dickson with Breakfast (2 adults & 2 children). If you are too lazy to drive all the way to Port Dickson, you may exchange the 1 night to Lexis Penang instead (value is lower for Penang stay). There was also free spa session & free karaoke session listed. Not bad huh?

Travel Log: Jamming @Hard Rock Penang

Destination: Penang, Malaysia
Duration: 2 Days 1 Night (Jun 22~Jun 23, 2018)

I’d been contemplating on getting the Hard Rock Hotel Penang Stage Pass for a while and finally got it last November mainly for the complimentary unlimited Pool Entry for 2 adults & 2 children below 12 years old. Along with pool entry, the membership also came with 1 night free stay at Hillview Deluxe Room (with breakfast for 2 adults & 2 children), 30 minutes free massage at Rock Spa, RM50 food voucher in hotel and some others discounts. New member application cost RM1,000 per annum whereas membership renewal cost RM900 at the time of this blogpost. The bummer was the free stay was blackout not only on public holiday but also on weekend as well.
Complimentary Pool Entry with Monthly Foam Party!
In case someone is interested...
In order to secure my booking in school holiday period on a Friday night, I actually booked it through the Stagepass contact (stagepass.penang@hardrockhotels.net) back in March. Lo & behold, I got the room and they even threw in a complimentary extra rollaway bed to be placed in the room! *happy*

After half day work in office, we finally arrived at the hotel at 3pm for check-in. The receptionist seemed to be new per the pin on her shirt and surprisingly lack of warmth & smile to be expected in a 4-star hotel. However, we would totally overlooked this when we got upgraded to Seaview Deluxe Room for FREE!!! Yay!!!!
A Room with a Balcony!!!
Let's take a Selfie!!!
The room was really spacious and located at the other quieter side of the pool. A giant Madonna “greeted” us from the wall with funky purple background lighting – clearly distinguish Hard Rock from other generic hotel room design.
The Kids are enjoying the Bed!!!
TV & Table...
It's a spacious room...
Bathroom - too bad no bathtub...
A Sliding Door between Bathroom & Bedroom...
Complimentary Rollaway Bed which was sent up later... The room service even provided us extra sets of toiletries..
I had an appointment to utilize my free 30minutes ‘rub my back’ massage at 4pm thus I told hb to get the kids downstairs to Lil Rock Kids Club for complimentary whole day kids activity where adult was not allowed. Apparently he didn’t listen to me and regret it later. =P

The massage was located at the Rock Spa and I was given a choice of food massage or back massage with option to upgrade it to 1 hour. I ended up taking the original back massage package without upgrading. I was brought to an outdoor individual hut with serene greenery & seaview. The therapist began the massage and it was kind of painful at times when she was trying to loosen my knots at my back. I guess I’d been too stress out!!! This was when I was secretly glad that I didn’t upgrade it to an hour to endure main pains. LOL!!! After the massage, I was served some ginger tea at courtyard beside the pool.

Too Excited until forgetting to take picture of the Hut's exterior.. LOL

Even the tea looks nice.. LOL

Finally got back to the room and found out the hb & kids were fully utilizing the free blockbuster feature at the TV by watching minions for millions of times. *rolleyes* We finally went to the pool at around 5pm+. The kids enjoyed the shallow sand pool as usual but one thing I noticed was how rude Middle Eastern was – perhaps just this one particular person but this really lower my perception of them.

This father brought his very young daughter who could hardly walked and just threw her there and proceeded to play with his phone. The daughter came over to us and started taking our kids’ sand play set which we allowed. After a while the father brought her away and simply ignored the fact that the daughter has thrown the set around the places. We collected it back and continued our fun before the father & daughter came back again where the daughter proceeded to ransack the set yet again (the father continued with his phone). We had to leave after a while and needed to take back the set and the daughter won’t let us take it back. The father finally noticed and told us we should’ve keep it hidden so that his daughter would not see it then rudely carried his daughter away and ignored us. HELLO?!!! Seriously!!! There was no ‘thank you’ and no helping in gather up the set after his daughter made a mess of it and now it seemed like we were the one to blame for not hidden it? It was our kids’ set and they were playing with it so why should we hide it? Thank you for opening our eyes to Middle Eastern Manner! *rolleyes*
The lil ones' Favourite Spot with limited Sand Play Set as most was taken by the Middle Eastern girl...
We went to Pizzeria (the in-hotel restaurant) for dinner to utilize my RM50 food voucher from the membership. We ordered Bruschetta, Aglio Olio, Margarita Pizza & Pepperoni Pizza at this alfresco setting. The food was mediocre and I actually thought even the pizza at Urban Food Hall in Gurney Paragon triumphed this! We paid additional RM75 after 20% member discount and RM50 voucher as the food here was definitely pricey. So if you want to eat in hotel, perhaps Hard Rock Café was the better choice as the food there seemed to be more delicious (but equally pricey though). =P

Btw, there was no toothbrush nor comb in the room but one would get it by calling the reception. They would deliver to your room promptly! Great Service!

Breakfast at Hard Rock was great with lots of varieties but sometimes long queue at the egg station due to school holiday season. This was where my 2nd encounter of RUDE Middle Eastern came from – a man rudely cut in our egg station queue and ordered directly to the chef. If I were the chef, I would’ve asked him to beat it and queue for his egg but that was not the case. I guess the chef was too timid for that. Anyway we enjoyed our breakfast until 11am before sending the kids to Lil Rock Kids Clubs for free activities so that we could pack for checkout.
Love the Roti Canai!!!
Some Nasi Lemak, Porridge & Croissant, totally forgotten to take pictures of the eggs....
The Family needs to take a breath at the balcony!
When the kids are not around!!!
We finally checked out just in time and picked up the kids with Captain America Shield, hand painting and some coloring! Wow! So many activities in 1 hour+. The 1 night stay was definitely not enough but we could always console ourselves that we still had the complimentary pool access whenever we wanted to come. =)
