A Month in Prison (Week 1)

Location: Jia Yi Confinement Centre
Duration: 30 Days (May 31~June 29, 2013)

Week 1: Introduction

Chinese has an old saying that the 1st month after baby delivery is the most important month for a lady to heal and take care of her body. Thus for Chinese, normally the lady will spend one month in “Confinement” (aka PRISON) the month after delivery. During the one month, there are so many old rules such as do not touch cold water or wrap yourself fully to avoid ‘wind’ and many more. Don’t ask me what the rules are though – I never really know about them anyway.
Jailed!!!
Usually, there are a few ways the new mom “survives” the 1st month:-
Hire a “Confinement Lady” – the confinement lady will cook for you, take care of the baby and basically take care of everything for you by staying with you 24/7 for 30 days.
- Sta y in a “Confinement Center” – there are so many confinement centers nowadays which provide lodging, food (5 meals a day), baby sitting services etc
- Take care of everything yourself or ask your mother/mother in law to help out (Not advisable!!! You will end up exhaust yourself)

This is the 2nd time I’ve stayed in Jia Yi Confinement Center (04-227 3333) which located near Botanical Garden in Penang Island. The mom and baby will be staying for a month where baby is staying in a nursery room whilst mom stays in mom’s room. The only con about the place is there is no single room – all room is in sharing-basis (either 2 bedded or 3 bedded with same price). So if you do not want to share room, I guess this place is not for you. From my experience, roommates are basically from many different backgrounds thus might need some time to get used to.

More Brochure!
They also have a new rule where visitors are not allowed to be in mom’s room – not even the husband. Thus if your husband comes to visit you, you will have to meet him in the lobby/living room.

You can inform the nursery whether you want to fully breastfeed so that they can send in your baby whenever the little one is hungry. Or you can ignore the baby for 1 month and ask the nanny not to bother you! Hahaa… Basically the place is like a farm where they force feed you 5 meals a day until you add on weight to produce more MILK! Gosh! Sound like a COW!!!
Produce! Produce! Produce!!!
Did i mention that you will be known as per your room number? For example, 1A, 2B or 3C. Sound like prison huh?

Anyway, Jia Yi’s best attraction is actually FOOD!!! All homecook and homemade and DELICIOUS – and this is coming from someone who seldom eats traditional Chinese food. Following are some samples of the FOOD during my 1st week there.

Breakfast (8am)
Breakfast is always served with Milo and some type of Chinese medicine (Cha Lat or Yellow Ginger) to eliminate wind from your body. They are different everyday and even their oatmeal tastes nice – which is a huge compliment coming from someone who HATE oatmeal. Every morning, the Indonesian maid will knock on your door and wake you up for breakfast and they will clean your room and make your bed when you are enjoying your breakfast.

Lunch (11am)
Lunch consists of 1 herbal soup, 1 meat (fish/pork/chicken) dish and 1 vegetable dish. They provide brown/white rice which you can take the portion you wish. Since chicken is forbidden after surgery (don’t ask me why!), my meals are mostly fish & pork. Also, the herbal soup is almost the same everyday so some might feel bored – personally I like the taste of the soup. The soup also helps to boost your breastmilk production – just imagine the breastmilk as FAT leaking out then you would be more motivated to produce more. Haha…
The Typical Lunch Set - 1 Soup, 1 Meat, 1 Vege with Rice
Pork & Broccoli
Fried Fish - YUMMY!!!

Lemon Cake & Carrot Cake!!!
Doughnuts!!!
Sausage Roll
Tuna Bun
Red Bean Soup
Even Baby Approves!!!
Dinner (5pm)
Like lunch, the typical dinner consists of 1 herbal soup, 1 meat (fish/pork/chicken) dish and 1 vegetable dish served with brown/white rice. Occasionally we will be served with WESTERN FOOD as well! Yummy!!!

Supper (8pm)
Supper is mostly comprised of soup based noodle/vermicelli/misua dish – the most common being misua in herbal soup. It’s always served with a cup of Chinese medicine drink (Cha Lat or Yellow Ginger) along with Milo.

There you have it! The pictures of how much FOOD I’ve stuffed myself with in A WEEK!!! Somehow I wonder whether this is a conspiracy for confinement center to stuff you with so much food to get commission from slimming center next time. Hhehee….. Anyway, the center has all the contacts for massage ladies (Malay or Thai) in case you need one. Thus this concludes my 1st week in Prison!

Next Week (How to survive the month?)
