Travel Log: A Foodiful Day in Taiping

Destination: Taiping, Malaysia
Duration: 1 Day (Jan 30, 2016)

It had been a long long time since we last visited Taiping thus on a morning of a hot Saturday, we finally crawled out of bed and drove to Taiping. Since we were not morning person, we simply had some breads before proceeding to our 1st destination – Spritzer EcoPark. On a weekday, they even organized plant tour to visit the production line of Spritzer products. Since we were there on a Saturday, we missed the only Saturday morning tour and ended up wandering around their EcoPark. There was a mini golf course in the park along with greenery and a Cactus Rock. They even had a wall for love lock. =P

It's a HOT HOT day
It was time for lunch and off we went to the Larut Matang Foodcourt – a place with tons of stalls! We ended up ordering the famous Mee Rebus, Char Koay Teow and chicken rice. We asked for extra chili for the Mee Rebus and it was really HOT! The combination of gravy, noodles and the crispy fried fritters were actually yummy but unfortunately for us – we mixed the chili too soon and it ended up too spicy. *facepalm* Char Koay Teow in Taiping definitely tasted different from Penang – I think they added in chai po (Preserved turnip) and it actually reminded me of Char Koay Kak in Penang. Last but not least – chicken rice! The chicken was braised i think – the good thing was the chicken meat was really tender and wouldn’t get stuck in your aging teeth gap when eating. Oops. Is that too much information? LOL!!!

After the super fulfilling lunch, we continued our journey Taiping Zoo. The weather was really hot but thankfully they have a train to bring us around the zoo so we wouldn’t have to walk if we didn’t want to. The zoo was just so-so and a lot of the animals were actually sleeping or hiding! Someone please fire those animals for not fulfilling their job description!

the view in Taiping Lake Garden was indeed stunning with all the trees and their shadow reflecting at the lake. One must-do thing in Taiping Lake – Pedal Boat!!! There were various designs of pedal boats there and we ended up with a mickey mouse in front but forget to take a picture of it. *facepalm* The worst thing was it started drizzling after we started and the boat had control issue – it just couldn’t turn right and it was left all the way! We had to reverse and forward many times just to return to the dock. *sweat*
Looks like Av. des Champs-Elysees in Paris? It's Taiping Lake Garden!!!

We were literally sweating like a dog after our pedal boat ride and ended up buying some cold drinks and ice cream bun! Taiping’s ice cream bun is the BEST! Yummy! It was time for an early dinner so we set out to Prima Coffee Shop for their famous Popiah (spring roll) but apparently it was closed! *gasp in horror*
HOT HOT HOT!! *sweat*

We were totally lost on what to eat and ended up driving back to Larut Matang food court since hubby was thinking to try the fried koay teow with fish ball but it was closed too! We ended up doing some googling last minute and drove to Siang Malam Foodcourt instead. We ordered Chee Cheong Fun (steamed rice roll with sauce), wanton noodle & char koay teow. According to some blogger, the Chee Cheong Fun was great there but since there were 2 stalls – we just had to pick one based on our luck. Thankfully the Chee Cheong Fun we ordered was delicious with all the sweet sauce and tons of sesame sprinkled on top! I’d always loved Chee Cheong Fun with sweet sauce and not a fan of the shrimp paste in Penang Chee Cheong Fun. Thumbs up!
Chee Cheong Fun!
The wanton noodle was also quite different from Penang as it more towards sweet side. The char koay teow was similar to the one at Larut Matang Foodcourt with Chai Por (Perserved turnip) taste. We finally called it a day and headed back to Penang after a day (& stomach) full of Taiping street foods. =)
