The story began in June 2013 with a RM10 voucher from Sushi
Tei Facebook (link). Once we’d tried Sushi Tei that one time,
we basically ‘demoted’ other sushi restaurant franchises. It’s our go-to
everyday Japanese dining. In fact, our “attendance” was flawless in the sense
that we visited almost every 2 weeks and we still haven’t finish tasting the entire
menu. Do apply for the Sushi Tei member card if you are a regular to enjoy 10%
discount. An
important thing to highlight – Sushi Tei Gurney Plaza’s food quality is SO MUCH BETTER than the one in Queensbay. Do try to get to Gurney Plaza branch
if possible!
We have two regular menu items that we ordered in every
single visit – Soba & Ikura Cawanmushi.
I do not know what ingredients they put in the soba soup
base, it’s just supposed to be soy sauce right? However, the soba soup base
triumphs other chain Japanese restaurants by aeons!!! It was slightly sweet and
salty at the same time and we won’t feel thirsty after eating this so it
mustn’t be due to ajinomoto… the soba is served generous portion wakame (seaweed)
along with it. The combination of this unassuming bowl of soba is surprisingly
marvelous.

As for Ikura Cawanmushi, the chef generously covers the
steam egg surface with thick layer of Ikura (salmon roe). The feeling of the
salty Ikura popping in your mouth along with smooth egg is simply irresistible!
*sigh* did I mention that their cawanmushi texture is really really really
smooth too?

Plain Cawanmushi |
Other than our 2 must-order items, we generally order
something else in the menu to try out different food. Some of them we like but
there are also some which we feel ‘meh’ and slash them off for next visit. Not
everything here is perfect okay? =P
When you feel your waistline has thicken, you may want to
try out the sashimi salad which is served with varieties of sashimi (generously
too) such as salmon & tuna. You may choose the salad dressing from Sushi Tei
dressing, wafu dressing, sesame dressing etc. I’ve always chose the Sushi Tei
dressing since I like its sourly taste.

From the kaiten belt, our favourites are definitely salmon
mentai sushi & salmon skin.

|
Deep Fried Salmon |
We’ve also tried various version of ‘don’ from
their menu – you may choose them by size for certain items such as ‘tendon’, ‘gyuniku
don’ & ‘yakitori don’. The tempura from ‘tendon’ is really crispy but
definitely not good to your diet plan. =P As for ‘gyuniku don’ & ‘yakitori
don’, I still prefer the beef version as chicken can be too dry sometimes. However,
I think both uses same sauce and it blends really well with rice. A tip – mix the
rice with silky smooth cawanmushi too! YUMMY!!! Another rice that we won’t too
keen about is the katsu-chicken rice, the chicken is full of fat and skin so it’s
kind of yucky. *sweat*

Sushi Tei does offer set lunch menu on weekdays but so far I’ve
only tried 2 of them. Frankly speaking? I still prefer the ala carte menu as
the set can be too large and only partial of the set is nice.
|
Shoyu Ramen Set - the Maki tastes Weird.. |
|
Curry Spaghetti Set - just okay.. |
What else? Desserts! The green tea ice ream and black sesame ice cream are both yummylicious - and this is from someone who doesn't like black sesame ice cream. =P

Sushi Tei has branches in Gurney Plaza & Queensbay mall
in Penang Island. Food quality in Gurney Plaza is definitely better thus try
get to that branch if possible.
