Travel Log: The Formosa of Thousand Night Markets (Day 6)

Destination: Taiwan
Duration: 13 Days 13 Nights (Nov 18~Dec 01, 2015)

Day 6: Kaohsiung -> Kenting

We will be departing for Kenting (墾丁) today and had arranged our transport with Xing Ji Minsu (兴吉旅店). It cost TWD350/pax to get from Kaohsiung Main Station (高雄火車站) to Xing Ji doorstep. This price was similar to a bus ticket to Kenting. We arrived at the station at 8.30am since the driver was supposed to be there between 8.30-9am. However, there seemed to be a mix-up and the driver went to Zuoying Station (左營高铁站) instead.

We waited for a long time and I ended up buying breads from Yamazaki since it was right there and was calling my name! LOL!!! The ride took around an hour and we were sharing the car with 4 other tourists. We finally reached Xing Ji and the driver actually charged us TWD400/pax which was the price departed from Zuoying Station! Hey! It was not our mistake you went to the wrong place! *curse*

Our Ride!
It was still quite early and our room was not ready yet. We booked a day tour from Xing Ji for tomorrow to explore Kenting before getting on a public bus just opposite the Minsu to HengChun (恆春). It was a scorching hot day again and we were kind of lost on what we should do in HengChun due to lack of planning! *facepalm* Thus we bought a beer from Family Mart which happened to locate right beside HengChun Bus Station. We keep trying to look for a travel map in HengChun but just couldn’t find one until finally we found the travel information counter which was located right outside the Family Mart at another entrance. *double facepalm*
Arrived!
Opposite the Minsu is the Entrance of some National Park - NEVER attempt to walk in! There is another 4-5km away before the REAL entrance!
Bus Staion
Finally here at Hengchun!

Beer!
7-11 was in our opposite direction and our feet just brought us there for reason unbeknown to us! 7-11 a calling! Anyway we ended up with more Japanese Spicy Oden (關東煮) again – this time with giant mushrooms! There was a doggie sitting beside us INSIDE the shop and no one bats an eye on this. Just imagine this happened in Malaysia! Instant FB news!
Oden again!
Hello Doggie!
Lunch!
Yummy Yummy!
Since HengChun is famous of its historical city (恆春古城), we’d decided to walk along the wall. It was not really old and well preserved since there were new style buildings within the wall which made it less charming in the old style perspective. We still preferred Lucca (link) or Rhodes Island (link) for their gorgeously nostalgic medieval building.

Before we started our walk, we made a brief stop to Ah Jia’s House (阿嘉的家) – a location for a famous movie Cape No. 7 (海角七號). A move that we’d never seen! LOL!!! Anyway, I paid TWD50 to get to the top floor and the friendly Owner's daughter helped me to take some photos. She is definitely a professional! Teaching me how to pose! =P
Sammy was here!
Here we are!
Hmm.. the famous Post?
OK, I've never seen the movie!

She is the Professional!
Even on Staircase!
After Ah Jia’s house, we set out to the West Gate. One thing we learned the hard way – the wall between North Gate and East Gate was NOT CONNECTED! The path might look nice and made for walking along the wall – BUT THERE WAS A GAP between the wall and the East Gate. You either had to jump down 1.5 floor height to the ground or you would have to JUMP OVER a 10 meters gap over the main road to the East Gate from atop! WTF!!! I think they had to cut off the wall to make way for the main road. We had to walk back to the North Gate AGAIN to get down from the wall. The distance between North & East Gate was around 1km so it meant we ended up walking additional 2 km to get to the East Gate!  Don’t believe the MAP! The Map stated that South Gate was the only one disconnected! It’s A LIE!!!!

Finally at East Gate!
Yet another Wall!
Right Across a School!
The South Gate
We were really tired after the long walk thus we took the public bus back to Kenting (墾丁大街) just in time for sunset at the beach near our minsu. The wave was really strong and hit us even though we were quite far away!
Strong Wave
Let's take a picture!
Going to hit us?
OH NO!!!
There was an Oyster Omelet Stall at the corner on the way back to our Minsu which stated they were selling crispy style omelet. Being a sucker for oyster omelet, we’d decided to give it a try. It disappointed us again as it was not crispy. However, there were lots of bean sprouts and vegetables inside thus giving it a refreshing taste. The Verdict? Tasted better than the stall at Riuhe Night Market (六合观光夜市) last night. =P
Oyster Omelet
Not Crispy Enough!
We finally checked in to our room and made a brief rest. Hubby’s shoes were totally soaked by the wave earlier thus I had to make an errand of buying a pair of cheap slipper near Watson’s there. It only cost TWD50 a pair and it was like 100 meter away from our Minsu! We finally started our food hunting with Grilled Boar Meat and Sausage (垦丁山猪石板烤肉) that cost TWD150. It was so HEAVENLY scrumptious! We just couldn’t stop eating it!

Hi Dooggie!
Grilled Boar & Sausage
This is so scrumptious!!!
We also bought the milk with tapioca ball (青蛙下蛋) and let me tell you – this tapioca ball tasted nothing like the plastic-y junk we had in Malaysia! Its texture was softer and chewier with strong brown sugar taste. I’m a tapioca ball HATER but yet I LOVED this! We also bought a cup of Mojito and the bartender prepared it right in front of us. Bad luck stroke again as the strong wind began and the Mojito wooden sign fell on hubby’s feet! OUCH! =P Anyway this was the 1st time we had alcohol in a night market! Way to go!

Mojito!
We continued our food hunting and bought Crispy Kenting Soup dumpling (脆皮汤包). This dumpling was special in the sense that it was really crispy from below. YUMMY!!! Definitely the best dumpling we’d eaten during our entire Taiwan Night Market Venture.
Crispy Dumpling!
YUMMY YUMMY!
After food, it was time for more alcohol again! We bought the tea infused with alcohol (干邑紅茶) and it was quite special. We then queued for the famous grilled deep fried chicken with plum powder (梅粉) and ‘sausage with hole’ (打洞香腸).  The chicken was deep fried then grilled before adding the powder that you wanted. We chose plum powder due to recommendation from bloggers and it was indeed a succulent combination of chicken and powder! *thumb up* The Sausage with Hole had some sweet Chinese Alcohol in the middle and it was a good blend too.
Tea with Alcohol? Count me in!

Let's get DRUNK!
Oops! Police Station is nearby though!

Shut up and take my money!
Our last food loot was the Mexican spicy chicken wing and it was just okay. We finally walked back to the Minsu and bought more milk with tapioca balls (青蛙下蛋) again – this time from another stall. We still preferred the 1st stall though. =P
