What’s for Lunch? – Taiwan Porridge Buffet at Hu Ji Chinese Restaurant

This was our 2nd time to Hu Ji Chinese Restaurant for their Weekend Lunch Taiwan Porridge buffet. As the name suggested, the main star is the porridge which coupled with some typical porridge side dishes such as salted egg (my favorite!), century egg, salted fish, fried anchovy, fermented beancurd (my favorite too!), assorted pickled vegetable and the ever present "you tiao" (Chinese cruller). Other than the typical porridge condiments, there were also Kiam Chai Beoy (Stew Salted Vegetable Soup) and Braised Chicken Feet.

Lots of Condiments! I love Salted Egg & Salted Fish!
Love the Fermented Beancurd but the You Tiao was kind of Hard though...
There were 3 types of porridge during our visit - plain porridge, sweet potato porridge and minced chicken and mushroom porridge (changing monthly). In case some feel porridge is less filling, there was also Japanese garlic fried rice during our visit.

That was not all - one could not escape calories so easily as there were many other homey & hearty dishes which would definitely make you reminisce of your grandmother’s cooking. Not all dishes were to our taste – strangely some dishes were kind of tasteless to us but I think it was an after-effect of eating too much salted egg & salted fish. LOL!!!
Lots of Dishes! Lotus Root, Steamed Fish & Deep Fried Beancurd
Fried Minced Meat & Lady Fingers
Cuttle Fish & Deep Fried Beancurd
Omelet & Some Vege
Sweet & Sour Chicken and Lady Fingers
The choices for desserts were scarce with fruits, some simple cakes and barley drink. However, at the price tag of RM25.90 nett per adult – we really couldn’t expect too much. You even get extra 15% discount for HSBC card member.  Anyway, the restaurant was almost full during our visit with families so I think it was popular especially for family with seniors and kids. The verdict? If you want some comfort food which feels like home - this is definitely the place for you!

Some Jellies?
Fruit anyone?
