What’s for Lunch? – Sunshine Square Food court (Part 1)

Has no idea what to eat? Want to eat something cheap but delicious? Looking for somewhere with air condition during the scorching lunch hour? Look no further! *drumroll* - Sunshine Square Food Court!!!

The food court offers so much varieties of food until you have difficulty to choose one. Let’s go through the list here: Curry Fish Head, Chicken/Roasted Pork rice, Bak Kut Teh, claypot rice, hotplate noodles, tomyam/plain noodles soup, wantan noodle, chu char (fried vermicelli, fried hor fun, fried hor fun etc), fried koay teow/rice, rice set, yong tau fu and the newly opened Sarawak kolo mee.

Tomyam/Plain Soup Noodle Stall

This is one of the most popular stalls in the food court and there is no surprise since their tomyam is SUPERB! It is so spicy and strong until you sweat in an air conditioned food court. You cannot imagine the long order list they have during lunch hour. It’s kind of a mix and match games on their menu:

Soup base: Tomyam or Plain Soup

Carbo: Vermicelli, Maggie noodle, yellow noodle or rice (for porridge)

Main ingredient: Meat, fish or prawn

My absolute favourite order? - Tomyam Maggie with Fish + extra fish for RM6. The fish tasted heavenly when eaten together with the spicy tomyam. Tomyam vermicelli was great too but the vermicelli kind of tamed the spiciness. If you are adventurous, try ask for extra spicy as well! I did it before and my only comment was OH MY!!! Definitely a good way to increase your metabolism and sweat it out! And some bathroom run but that’s just too much information ain’t it? =P

Rice Set Stall

The rice set stall at the end of the row is totally value for money and not bad on taste – might not be good on your calories intake but hey, we need FOOD to make it through the long workday! Their menu is also mix and match of:-

Main course: deep fried fish, chicken or pork

Sauce: Sweet & Sour, Black Pepper, Kung Pao, Mongolian, Mayo and thick curry (only for one of the set)

The plate of rice set is served with the main course with sauce, vegetable and a fried egg along with the rice. All of that only for RM5! Totally value for money huh? We adore the Mongolian sauce which tastes distinctive and so far only available in this stall.

Sarawak Kolo Mee Stall

Kolo Mee has been gaining popularity in Penang and now we have one in Sunshine Square too. They have original kolo mee, black sauce kolo mee, red sauce (Char Siew sauce) kolo mee, chicken kolo mee, kolo mee soup as well as Sarawak laksa.

So far we’ve tried the original kolo mee (RM4.50) and chicken kolo mee (RM4.50). I prefer the original kolo mee which is served with soup, char siew, minced meat, pork lard, vege and chili. The combination of all that blends surprisingly well with the minced meat making the noodle not as dry as imagined. The chili is a bit sour-ish (kind of like chicken rice chili) and it gives the noodles some extra ‘zing’. The only downside? It can be quite oily and high-carb for those weightwatchers out there! Hey you! Don’t look at the ceiling feigning innocent! :p

Original Kolo Mee

The chicken kolo mee is bit of a letdown for me though – it was served with some fish cake, fried chicken pieces and vege. However, the combination is quite dry and the chicken meat that I got was full of chicken gristles!!! How disgusting!!! I’ve vowed not to order the chicken version ever but we will definitely try out their other versions.
