Valentine’s Day: Nightmare, Celebration or Gluttony?

Hey! It’s Valentine’s day! A guy’s worst nightmare! In fact, I once read that Valentine’s day is the day with highest breakup probability! You might ask: WHY? Valentine’s day is the most romantic day! Well, here are two of the most common occurrences.
1)   The guy’s gift or planning is not up to the girl’s expectation – BANG! You are insincere of your love to me! I HATE you! Oops…
2)   A couple was stuck in the car due to traffic jam on Vday, temper flares and they start to argue for a smallest matter, the girl jumps out of the car, the guy couldn’t leave his car in the middle of the road since it’s not a darn movie! Thus this is the last time they see each other.. Hahaha… I could totally imagine this happening in the jammed Gurney. =p
Have this ever happen to you? =p
Valentine’s day is also a day when restaurant selling ridiculously expensive “valentine’s meal” to get some quick cash. I actually saw that Coffee Island in Gurney Drive priced their valentine’s meal for RM99++ per pax! My Gosh! RM99++ per pax for such a location?

Anyhoo, we ended up at Ingolf’s Kneipe for dinner – they had a valentine’s menu but they are also serving their normal menu as well. We ended up ordering the valentine’s set as the price sounded reasonable at RM128 Nett per Couple with drinks, soups, main course and dessert. Here is the menu!
Ingolf's Vday Menu
We were served with our drink and it looked great. It was basically grape juice mixed with cherry liquor. It tasted sweet. =)
Our "Champagne"
The soup was rootcelery soup with “red pearls” – we were wondering what red pearls means and finally found the answer. There were fish roes in the soup! Such a unique concept! The slightly salty fish roes complimented the creamy soup well.

The "Red Pearl" - Fish Roe
Our main course consisted of beef, salmon, prawns, mussels and scallops with garlic bread, asparagus and cherry tomato. It was quite a big platter. The beef and the salmon were both thick. The prawns were in normal sizes – not the “kingprawn” they boosted in the menu and the scallops were hiding underneath the garlic bread. =p

Mussels
The beef was very well cooked and just at the right texture. The platter was actually quite a minimalist cooking with very little sauces or gravy thus bringing out the original flavor of the ingredients.
Overall platter - Look at that beef!
Our dessert was Haagen Dazs ice cream topped with berries. Look great huh? It was quite sweet though.
Dessert Time!
We were so full after dessert until we totally forgot about our coffee/tea and paid our bill to call it a night. Ingolf’s is really a popular place as we could see a lot of walk-in customers being turned away due to full reservation. Actually this doesn’t only happen on Valentine’s Day – it happens every time we visited as well. So do remember to make your reservation if you plan a visit. Oh, and you definitely must try their meat platter! Big enough for 3-4pax! And their heavenly mushroom sauce!

Ingolf’s Kneipe is located at Tanjung Bungah, opposite Conthorpe Orchid Hotel, Penang.

  2. Hi Celaeno, it certainly looks like you had quite a feast. I agree that the "red pearls" in the soup was a very interesting concept - I've never heard of anyone doing that. I do notice that you tend to eat a lot more fish in Malaysia than we do in the west.

Glad you had a good evening!
