Farm House Café - A Gem below Kek Lok Si Temple

When one was craving for lobster, which Penang restaurant would pop into one’s mind? Surprisingly one of these restaurants was actually located at the most unconventional location ever – in an old house right below Kek Lok Si Temple in Air Itam. There was no air condition in the restaurant thus having lunch might be too hot for some patrons though. We went to the café in a chilly Sunday night and it was definitely a perfect night to indulge the food by sitting outdoor.
Is this the Right Place?
Yes! It's Farm House Cafe!

What is inside then?

Cute Wall Drawing...
The 1st thing the waiter told us: we are famous for Maggie noodle! LOL!!! Well, he was right as Farm House Café was famous for the 2pax Maggie noodle pot in Savory Tom yam soup. One might ask what was so special about this. The allure – one might chose to have lobster, snow crab leg, salmon or cheaper pot like pork as main dish of the pot.

Drinks Menu
We ended up ordering the Lobster Zaabbb Noodle and a Soda Bucket (Spring – Orange & Mango). The soda bucket was ginormous and could be shared by at least 2 people. It was essentially Sprite + Sunkist syrup I think. The drink was really refreshing and actually was quite the perfect companion for the tom yam noodle.
Our "Spring" Soda Bucket!!!
Our jaw dropped when our Lobster Zaabbb Noodle Pot was served. It just looked so WOW! The lobster was not overly huge but did pack quite a lot of meat. For some reason some part of the meat near the head was undercooked and tasted quite yucky. I had to drink lots of tom yam soup to wash out the taste. Their tom yom soup though was flawless! It was really sour & spicy which was totally appetizing. We would see they put a lot of spices in it.
Looks Alluring huh?! This is a Pot for 2...
The Lobster!!!
One small peeve was the raw egg in the pot – the pot was not hot enough and did not have the heat retention of a hot pot should be to at least half cook the egg even though I kept pouring hot soup on it when it was 1st served (which should be at its hottest). They should consider to use better heat retention pot so that the egg could be at least half cooked and to retain the heat so that patrons could have hot soup till the end. Our soup grew cold very fast on a chilly night. =)
Perfect Combination!!!
Everything Polished Off!!! =P
They were very famous on milk product as well but we did not order it though. Perhaps next time. =P

Farm House Café is located right under Kek Lok Si Temple (near car park) in Penang, Malaysia.

What’s for Lunch? – Elite Avenue Edition (Part 4)

Elite Avenue is basically buzzing with restaurants now. A few restaurants had come & gone but here are some that were still there at the moment. =P

KO B.Q. Korean Restaurant
Situated at one of the corner lot was KO B.Q. – one of the longest running restaurant in Elite. Frankly speaking we’d only been there once and ordered their lunch set for 2 which consisted of kimchi stew & a huge portion of Chicken Dak Galbi. Basically this set could easily fed 4 people to be honest! Our eyes popped out when we saw it being served.
Plenty of Free Banchan
The kimchi stew was not as thick and flavourful as we liked – we still preferred kimchi stew from Daorae or even the newly opened Ssambap (link) for a heavier flavoured (namely more sour & spicy) Kimchi Stew.
Kimchi Stew
For Chicken Dak Galbi, the server brought the gas stove with on our table and fried in on the spot. It was definitely a mountain-ful of FOOD. It tasted okay – not really a standout unfortunately. At the end we could not finish our food and ended up takeaway the leftover. LOL!!!
This is like a Mountain!!!
Here we go!
Still in Process!
Tada!!!
Uncle Jang Dak Galbi
Speaking of Dak Galbi, there was also Uncle Jang – a quite famous Dak Galbi joint now opening in Elite as well. Frankly speaking this place was definitely not too suitable for lunch as one would smell like Dak Galbi after the meal.
Uncle Jang during Lunchtime - almost Empty
Free Banchan - 2 types only
I noticed they were doing some lunch buffet promotion as well but we were ordering ala carte during our visit few months ago. The restaurant was almost empty during our visit and we ordered the Dak Galbi for 2 pax with Ramen & egg add-on.
Le't get start!
More time is needed!
The server fried the concoction right in front of us and I must say the Dak Galbi in Uncle Jang was definitely better than the one from KO B.Q. We did not order extra spicy flavor but the normal flavor had already fulfilled Malaysian Heavy Palate with its slight spicy and sweet taste.
Almost done!
The food was aplenty and 3 of us couldn’t finish it at the end even though we only ordered portion for 2pax. The only complaint – it was quite oily especially when you ate towards the end. FAT!!! Anyway, my colleague’s husband had the funniest comment – it tasted like a glorified version of Indian fried noodle! *facepalm*
Here we go!
K Food
Since we were on a roll today with Korea Food – let’s talk about yet another Korean restaurant in Elite – K Food. K Food was kind of like the poor man’s Korean food as the price was cheaper than most Korean restaurant. Quality Vs price there if you know what I mean. *wink*
Free Banchan
We’d only been there once & ordered their kimchi stew & spicy Korean fried noodle. Both items were very mediocre. I think the hubby’s home cook Extra Spicy Instant noodle from Korea tasted much better than this. So go buy your own Korean noodle and cooked it yourself! LOL!!!
Kimchi Stew
Spicy Korean Fried Noodle
Go buy this instead!
Home cooked Spicy Korean Noodle!
Wakaba Japanese Noodles
Let’s take a moment to travel from Korea to its neighbor Japan for a minute. Wakaba was famed for their home made noodles with a downside of being expensive. I think they did have some loyalty stamp card for free food to attract returning customer.

We’d tried the Yasai Shoyu Ramen, Wakame Soba & Chasyu Shoyu Ramen – all of them were mediocre and not really spectacular. Frankly speaking Wakaba would not jumped into our head if we were craving for ramen – Japin or Miyabi would. I guess this contributed to the almost empty restaurant whenever we walked pass. Anyway, Wakaba might be a good choice if one would be craving for ramen and in Elite avenue at the moment. =P

Zi Zai Restaurant: Home Cook Style Chu Char

Zi Zai Restaurant was the result of a 3rd generation chef from a family of restaurant businesses. Hock Chai (the owner) was not only a chef but a famous foodie owning a blog (link) who happened to be an old school mate of hubby. The one thing that drew us to this restaurant was basically “Chung Ling Scrambled Egg”! Any Chung Ling Alumni should be familiar with this! =P

Frankly speaking, Zi Zai’s “Chung Ling Scrambled Egg” (钟灵碎蛋) did not really tasted like the one inside Chung Ling’s canteen. For some reason, it actually tasted better with fish sauce & chili added in during the frying process. Oh dear, I could polish off the whole pan by myself!
This is HEAVEN!!!
We’d also tried out the Grandma’s fried chicken, fish fillet claypot tofu, fish ball seaweed soup, steamed mince pork with salted fish & belacan Kang Kong. Out of the dishes, our favourites would be fish fillet claypot tofu as the fish, tofu & vegetables were all blended perfectly in a delectable gravy to pour on rice.
Fish Fillet Claypot Tofu
The same went for Belacan Kang Kong which was perfect to pair with rice. The seaweed soup was definitely a nice choice to round up the meal.
Belacan Kang Kong
Seaweed Soup
Grandma’s fried chicken could be a bit underwhelming as the taste was not as strange for people with heavy palate. As for steamed minced pork – it could be quite oily at some part and i'd prefered to have more salted fish in the mixture. =P
Grandma's Fried Chicken - or what's left of it! =P
Steamed Minced Pork with Salted Fish
Zi Zai Restaurant was definitely a good choice for home cook style Chu char with reasonable price tag. I think it would be a hit for Chung Ling Alumni to reminisce on the famous scrambled egg! Do take note that it was only opened for dinner though.
Let's Reminisce over a glass of 'Fighting Fish' aka Longan drink!!! LOL!!
Zi Zai Restaurant is located in Paya Terubong at a shoplot at the left side before Fire station if driving from Shell Paya Terubong in Penang, Malaysia.

What’s for Lunch? - D’ Fat Mona Lisa Cafe

D’ Fat Mona Lisa was the place that we managed to google on a lazy day due to its close proximity. It seemed to be praised by many bloggers thus we’d decided to give it a try. We were charmed by the ambience of the Café which was housed in a bungalow. We were thinking to try their highly recommended ‘Espresso Chicken’ but were told that it was sold out. We ended up ordering BBQ grilled chicken, mushroom soup, salmon cup & a cup of hot chocolate.
Can you see the Mona Lisa?
Nice Ambience
A few different sections
The mushroom soup was normal – thankfully not the instant soup type that we dreaded. The BBQ Chicken was just passable but the portion was really little. Perhaps the chicken was on diet? LOL!!! Anyway, the grilled Chicken in The Cruise at The One (link) was definitely better in term of size & taste. =P
Mushroom Soup
BBQ Chicken
The Salmon Cup tasted quite nice on the top (reminds me of otak-otak) but a total disaster at the bottom as it was drenched in OIL!! *gasp* It was also in small portion as well.
Salmon Cup
Hot Chocolate
All in all, we were quite baffled by all the praises from bloggers at this café. The price simply didn’t translate well with the food quality & quantity. Definitely not our cup of tea and not worth to eat the calories to be a Fat Mona Lisa. =P

D’ Fat Mona Lisa was located at the same street with McDonald’s Greenlane car entrance but was situated at the left side if turning in from Jalan Masjid Negeri in Penang, Malaysia.
