Black Kettle is another café cum bakery
located within Georgetown Heritage Site. I was always curious whenever we drove
pass this shop as it was just around the corner of the fire station in Beach
Street. We finally had the chance to step into the café on a lazy Saturday
morning. Parking was still okay at that hour (around 11am) and we parked right
beside their side door.

We ordered egg benedicts (RM24), soft shell
crab burger (RM28), Matcha Latte (RM11) and Choco Freddo (RM12) before going
off to take a look at their bakery section. They have varieties of pastry and
bun and surprisingly the price was considered quite normal – same range like
“Love a Loaf”.

We did not order anything from the bakery but ended up ordering
Tiramisu (RM14) at their cake section. The cake was quite pricey and small in
size though. Strangely the tiramisu was kind of dry at the Italian lady finger
part. I think perhaps it was left too long there?

Finally our egg benedicts was served – it was
really scrumptious with the runny egg yolk and thick layer of spinach
underneath the egg & salmon. The only downside was the meagre amount of
salmon provided in the layer. =P

The soft shell crab burger was next and we
were pleasantly surprised at the size of the crab. It was huge and we could see
the thick layer of meat when we cut it in half. Not to mention it was really
juicy as well. DA YUM!!! The fries served together was delish as well with a
hint of garlic flavor.

As for the drinks, the Matcha latte had a
strong Matcha taste rather than milky taste whereas the Choco Freddo was just
okay.

One thing to note was prices in the menu are
entitled for 10% service charge + 6% GST thus making the already high price
even steeper. Our total bill came in at around RM104 with 2 main courses, 2
drinks and a cake. I guess this place was better suited for occasional indulgence.
Black Kettle is located at Beach Street,
Penang.
