What’s for Lunch? – Queensbay Edition (the Fast & Furious)

Queensbay is a popular lunch location especially for factory “slave” like us in Bayan Lepas. Sometimes we are not even sure whether food or shopping is more important in the short one hour lunch break! I could give up shopping but i'm not a quitter! LOL!!! So i have tons to buy but still want to enjoy some nice food, where should I go? Other than the obvious fast food (McD & KFC) and Jusco lower ground food section, here are some tips to spice up your quick lunch!
Some Choices at Jusco Lower Ground Food Section
Shihlin Taiwan Street Snacks
Located in lower ground floor, this is a popular place for XXL Crispy Chicken. Another popular choice would be their oyster mee sua – low in calories, super delicious and ensure satisfaction to your tummy. You will sigh in contentment after finishing this hot bowl of mee sua.
Oyster Mee Sua
If you are a rice person, you might try their set rice with crispy chicken & beancurd which comes with a bottle of v-soy! Occasionally there are some seasonal menu which offers squid ink tempura or ‘lu lou fan’ (minced pork rice) too!
The Happy Rice Set
Lu Lou Fan
Deep Fried Sweet Potato
Kumamono Bear Paw Bun
Located near to Shihlin, this little stall is selling super cute burger in fluffy bear shape bun (milk, brown sugar or wholewheat). We always call this “PAW PAW” whenever we think about this. The bun is straight from steamer and it is really soft and fluffy – I like the milk flavor the most.  =)
Kuma's Chicken with Milk Bun
The price is based on the meat you choose – normal chicken, crispy chicken or fish and you may choose the sauce too (Tartar sauce, sesame sauce, cheese sauce or black pepper sauce). One can also top up to make this a set which includes a set dish (Curry fish ball or Wedges) and a drink. They even serve mini paw now for small eater!
The PAW PAW with Curry Fish Ball
Habanero
Habanero is a Mexican fast food concept restaurant serving burrito and taco with same concept as Taco Bell in the US. You may choose burrito or taco and pick your own filling (rice, salsas, vegetables, meat and most importantly the spicy level), the waiter will wraps everything into the burrito with tin foil. You can even make it a meal with nachos and drink. The burrito size is extremely big though and if rice is included in the mix, weight watchers might want to share 1 burrito to SHARE THE FAT!
The Burrito Set
It's a BIG burrito!
This is Chicken..
Personally I love their taco with beef better than burrito even though the FAT level is still high. If you want to skip the burrito/taco calories, you may even skip it and make it a salad meal. =)

Queens Hall Food Court
This self-service food court has nice food but with slightly higher price tag for a food court in Penang. it’s newly renovated and has gazillion of choices – as long as you are not caught in a long queue, the lunch will be quick and nice. Some of our favourites are the porridge set from “I Love Yoo!” and the beef noodle from Sukhothai (queue might be long).
I Love Yoo!!!
Beef Noodles
The chili pan mee there is super popular and until now we did not have a chance to try as the queue is simply scary! Sometimes we will just buy some light bites (chicken pie, curry puff or tuna puff) from Mak Ee instead.
Mak Ee!
Tuna & Curry Puff
Love a Loaf is there too so this might be your last resort for a quick lunch or just buy it for next day’s breakfast. =)
Love a Loaf - Hmm.. many loafs!
Last but not least, if you are craving for Coffee Bean Matcha Ice Blended and watching your calories intake but want to spend most of your lunchtime shopping? Well, here is a suggestion - not a perfect one but who cares? LOL! Buy a salad bowl (the one with balsamic dressing , NOT the thousand island dressing!!!) from Jusco and eat it as lunch and drink your Matcha ice blended! *wink*
The Dieter's Lunch with a totally FAT drink!

What’s for Lunch? – Sunshine Square Food court (Part 2)

Sunshine Square Food Court is definitely a place we frequently visit for its delicious food, low price, air conditioned food court with an indoor car park (else we run the risk of getting soaked if the rain suddenly pouring during lunchtime!). My previous Part 1 post (linkmentioned about the Tomyam/Clear Soup Stall, Rice Set Stall & Sarawak Kolo Mee Stall. Here are some additional photos of the Tomyam Meat Vermicelli and Black Sauce Kolo Mee from our visits after the 1st post.

The Tomyam Meat Vermicelli contains minced pork and meatball thus the minced pork can absorb tomyam well. However, my LOVE is still the FISH! B+F+F please (Haha.. those who frequent the stall should know this code)!
Tomyam Meat Vermicelli with Minced Pork, Meatball & Fishball
After trying the original Sarawak Kolo Mee and the Chicken Kolo Mee, we gave the black sauce kolo mee a try. It tasted kind of sweet so I think I still prefer the original one. =)
Now let’s move on to other stalls!
Black Sauce Kolo Mee
Wantan Mee Stall
This stall is handled totally alone by an Indonesian (I think is Indonesian), she cooks, takes order, delivers the food all by herself. Don’t be alarmed by the girl’s ethnicity as the wantan mee is delicious! It’s one of the most popular stalls in Food court. Some even orders the deep fried wantan as snacks. For me, I always order the wantan soup as lunch whenever I’m feeling FAT (which is EVERYDAY). *facepalm* It was chewy and I love it when the soup become sour-y when I throw in some green chili. *thumb up*
My BELOVED Wantan Soup with Green Chili
Taiwanese Rice Set Stall
This stall specializes in Taiwan style rice set with RM5 as lowest price. The RM5 rice set includes fried chicken cutlets, braised egg, some minced meat on rice and pickled vegetable to complete the taste. This is certainly comfort food whenever one is starving. They also have even larger set with lemon chicken and spicy crispy chicken. When it was 1st opened, the rice was really dry as there is not enough gravy from the minced meat but they have since improved tremendously.
This is the Basic Set with Fried Chicken, Braised Egg, Pickled Vegetable and Lu Lou Fan

This is the Set with Spicy Crispy Chicken in following picture! =P
Look at the Sheer Size of this Spicy Crispy Chicken!
Instant Cook Koay Teow Soup/Sell Whatever Stall
This is a newer stall in the middle selling instant cook koay teow soup – you may choose Maggie mee, Loh Shu Fun, yellow noodles or vermicelli. A bowl of these contains minced pork, pork skin, meatball, fishball and vegetables. The portion is quite big so you might want to reconsider if you want to order the “big” one. Other than soup based meal, it also offers dried koay teow as well. You may also add on egg for your koay teow if you are an egg person like me. =)
Dry Koay Teow with Add-on Egg
It also has some herbal pork leg vermicelli and even a set of nasi lemak rice with satay which my colleague sampled. Well, she says those are not bad!
Nasi Lemak Set
Chu Char Stall
The Chu Char Stall near Kolomee is selling all the chu char stuffs such as fried hor fun, fried vermicelli, KL style loh mee and one of our favourites is their “Tai Lok Mee”. The thick black soy sauce coupled with the thick noodles is definitely something to try. My colleague also loves their salted fish fried vermicelli.
Tai Lok Mee
Stir Fried Stall
The Stir Fried stall is one of the oldest in the food court and it’s located beside wantan mee stall. They sell fried rice, fried koay teow, fried noodle, fried loh shu fun etc. We do sometimes order the fried koay teow when we throw our diet plan out of the window! *facepalm*

Sunshine Square Food Court is located in Sunshine Square (Duh!) in Bayan Baru, Penang.

What’s for Lunch? – All Seasons Place (Part 1)

All Seasons Place was kind of like the most happening places near Farlim area with restaurants, shops and even a hypermarket (Giant). However, a lot of restaurants come and go during the years so I guess it’s really competitive there. I miss the Manhattan Fish Market here so much! These are some restaurants that are still surviving as of this posting. =)

Secret Recipe
I’m quite surprised this survives for so long as it seems to be always empty. They normally have set lunch or set dinner set with rotating choices. My favourite choice is definitely their lasagna served with a hot soft bun. I would even order it ala carte if it’s not in set rotation during my visit. It’s the combination of cheese, beef Bolognese coupled with the soft bun that totally awaken your taste buds and expand your waistline... *sigh in contentment*
Beef Lasagna! The Soup is only available as a set lunch - Only the Lasagna & Soft Bun is served for Ala Carte...
Anyway, set lunch normally comes with a drink (iced lemon tea) whereas dinner comes with drink and soup. They even served keropok free of charge after your order. Another choice that I absolutely love is the puff & pie stuffs especially the Spicy Chicken Cornish – the sheer size of it can easily be a meal itself and expand your waistline again!
Iced Lemon Tea and Free Keropok
Typical Mushroom Soup
Spicy Chicken Cornish - it's HUGE!
Look at that!
Some other popular orders are the grilled mushroom chicken with rice. Personally I’m not too fond of their pasta especially the creamy type since the garlic taste was too prominent. Their portion is really big though so you will be beyond stuffed.
Grilled Mushroom Chicken - the Chicken is really Tender...
Fish & Chips - 2 pcs of Fish there!
Spaghetti Bolognese
Creamy Shrimp Macaroni
As for cakes, I hate their red velvet (even McCafe has better one) but love their yoghurt cheese and anything chocolate-y! Oh gosh, did I mention FAT?! *facepalm*
Marshmallow Cheesecake
Something Chocolate-y!
Yoghurt Cheese Cake and another Chocolate-y cake...
Red Velvet - this i hate...
Coffee Elements
If you are craving for some coffee arts and exquisite looking breakfast, Coffee Elements is definitely the place for you. We ordered the Chocolate Nutella since we do not drink coffee and were pleasantly surprised that it has a beautiful “chocolate art” on top too! =)
Chocolate Nutella
We ordered the poached egg (one with ham and another with vegemite) and really loved it. One might say these choices were not enough to fill one’s tummy but I guess now we had more excuse ordering more choices to try! LOL!!!
Poach Egg with Ham (English Bloomer)
Poached Egg with Vegemite
In case a big meal is needed, one might ordered the big breakfast with ham, scrambled egg, potato salad, baked beans, long sausage, mushroom (must better than Kitchen 23 – link) and hash browns. Gosh! My saliva is dropping by just listing out all the food here. The taste was not really extraordinary but the food presentation really made up for it. Come on, who doesn’t like their food pretty? =P
Big Breakfast
Who’s Bryan?
Who’s Bryan is another western eatery long established in All Seasons Place. It does serve set lunch and set dinner but I think during weekday only? We’d only been there once using Groupon cash voucher thus not eligible for set meal. We ordered the Marshmallow Chocolate, Grilled Chicken with sausage and Aglio Olio but frankly speaking were not too impressed with the food. The price for ala carte menu was not cheap as well thus I think if you are craving for western food in All Season’s Place – James Foo or even Coffee Elements might be the better options. =)

Winters Warmers
I’d been a customer for Winters Warmers since my High School day when they opened their 1st branch in Prangin Mall. There are more and more branches now (Precinct 10, Gurney Plaza, Queensbay & All Seasons) but one thing I realized was the food quality is different from branches.

I adored their afternoon tea set (link) but not really particularly fond of their main course menu. Before that I’d only tried out their sandwiches in Queensbay but was thinking to try out their main courses since they were selling Groupon Vouchers.

We ordered their signature iced mixed fruit tea, herbs crumbs salmon and lamb Shank when we dropped by the All Seasons Place branch. The order somewhere went wrong and we waited for a long while and expedited our order before the lamb was served – apparently they’d miss-placed our order. As a token of apology, the manager served us brownie and ice cream  but it was not enough to salvage the overly-salty lamb – I think the chef might’ve dropped the whole bottle of salt on that… *sweat*
Iced Fruit Tea
Mushroom Soup - tasted like Campbell Soup.. =P
Herbs Crumbs Salmon - kind of falling apart
Super Salty Lamb Shank
Complimentary Dessert
We did visit the One Precinct branch and ordered cheese baked rice and grilled fish and they were just passable. So the advice is – order the signature iced mixed fruit tea and the afternoon tea set or just sandwiches when you are in Winters Warmers. Their strength is definitely on these rather than main course.
Baked Rice
Grilled Fish
Zhou Porridge -> Xuan Xin Kitchen
The restaurant used to be called “Zhou Porridge” specializing in porridges before they changed the concept and renamed it Xuan Xin Kitchen. They still sell porridge but with less options. I used to love the porridge there as it was congee type and was very smooth.
Fish & Egg Porridge
Roasted Pork - Disappointed as it was hard and not crispy
Fried Porridge
After the changes, we’d been there once to try out their food. They have set meals as well as ala carte option and we ended up ordering ginger fried hor fun, shrimp paste & egg porridge and HK style Chee Cheong fun. The Shrimp paste & egg porridge was the best out of our order whereby the HK Chee Cheong fun was not up to par like Dim Sum House in Macalister Road (link). One thing I loved about Xuan Xin group restaurant is the chilli paste provided on each table. We are definitely addicted to that. However, do go to their Queensbay or Gurney branch if you really want to enjoy it – there are more choices and the food quality is much better. =)
Ginger Fried Hor Fun
Shrimp Paste & Egg Porridge
HK Style Chee Cheong Fun - the skin is too thick and the shrimp is falling apart...
TomYummy Noodle House
Everytime when we walked pass the alley, there was always this strong Tomyam smell coming from TomYummy. We’d finally manage to try it once but feeling a bit underwhelmed as the Tomyam seemed to be very salty and less tomyam taste. I still preferred the Tomyam from Sunshine Square Foodcourt (link). They do have other options (Tomyam or Clear Soup) but we did not try it again. Perhaps we should go again to try their rice topped with Tomyam minced meat & egg?
Cute huh?
Not Fond of this though...
I Mum Mum
This restaurant is always swarmed with customer – it is not difficult to understand as the price is low and food is nice. Our common order is the dry pan mee and the crispy pork. The crispy pork is definitely yummy and the noodle is nice to eat with their chili paste. The chili paste is not as spicy as we wished but it provides a slight sourly taste which complements the noodle well.
The Chilli Paste on Table
The Typical Dried Noodle
Yummy Crispy Pork
With the low price tag, one really cannot complain more on the food eventhough I prefer Face to Face Pan Mee but it is located in Times Square and The One Ideal. More detailed review between the two Pan Mee restaurants can be read here (link).

Kafe Roti Bakar
We liked Kafe Roti Bakar for its toasted bread with half boiled egg. Other than that, their curry wantan noodle is springy and nice as well. Rice set was just okay so we normally don’t order it unless we are really hungry. More detailed review can be read here (link). =)
Half Boiled Egg on Toast!
Sushi King
If you are too lazy to dine-in, you might want to consider to take out from Sushi King! At RM39.90, this platter is definitely worth the money and can easily feed 2-3 pax! This is their so-called Party Pack and it is not in their menu but in brochure at the counter. So just look for the brochure when you walk in and order this! =)
The Party Pack! *thumbs up*
All Seasons Place is located at Farlim, Penang.
