What’s for Lunch? - Golden Week Edition

What’s for lunch? A common question among co-workers every working day – a simple yet challenging question especially when one runs out of idea on what to eat in Bayan Lepas area! It’s especially a headache during “Non-Government” week where bosses are on vacation. *wink*

So let’s see how we fare during the “Merdeka” week! One thing we noted was Queensbay can be a good choice – you can dine & shop at the same time and there are a variety of foods there. Here are some of the foods we sampled!

Azuma
A very popular Japanese Restaurant at 2nd floor and it’s always crowded during lunchtime. My absolute favorite order is the Soft-Shell Crab Rice set (RM18). They give out generous portion of the crabs and tons of rice served with Miso Soup – definitely a must-try! If you are adventurous, try eat it with tons of wasabi-soya sauce combo… you might surprise yourself by finishing all the rice as well.

Azuma also provides seasonal sets which cost around RM20-30 which served with cawanmushi, salad and soup – their portion is quite big and here are some of the samples of the set.

Queens Market
Restaurant can be pricey for poor working class like us – one of the more economic choices would be Queens Market at 3rd floor – in fact, we spent quite many lunchtimes in the foodcourt to try out different stalls and dishes.

Do you know that there is a Japanese stall there? Not the teppanyaki stall but the stall beside Little Wok. The Japanese stall sells lots of different set rice range from RM9.80 to RM20. The set normally includes 1 dish, rice, soup and green tea. You can always add on RM1 to get the cawanmushi. There are wasabi and other condiments at the stall for your taking. Here are some sets that we tried.
Kare Chicken set – it was on promotion and was only RM10.80 a set and we added on RM1 for cawanmushi. The kare was SPICY!!! It was so spicy that it makes you sweat like a pig! Or I guess the air condition there wasn’t working that well. But it was so yummy to eat with the rice. A must-try for spicy-lover!
The HOT HOT HOT Kare Chicken Set
Another chicken set – ‘horraido’ or something… only RM9.80 a set. The sauce is slightly sweet and quite common.
A Milder Set
There is also another stall called “Ippin Ramen” selling ramen/udon of sorts. We tried out their fish ramen and Si Chuan ramen (RM7.80). The fish was fresh for the fish ramen whilst the Si chuan ramen was sour and a bit spicy served with 3 big dumplings and some crabsticks. There are chili concentrate at the counter for your taking as well if you feel like something more exciting. I wish it was more spicy though.

The Little Nyonya Cuisine
The little Nyonya Cuisine is similar to Oldtown but with Nyonya food. Since we’ve run out of idea what to eat, we’ve decided to give this one a try. We were not disappointed though. We had the “Black Pepper Chicken Rice” and “Nyonya Curry Noodle” and both were delicious.
Unlike the curry noodle from hawker stall, the Curry for the noodle was very thick – like kapitan curry thick! Very nice!

Japin
Japin is another popular choice for lunch - in fact it was is so popular that it's always swarmed with people! You will either have to go early or be willing to wait for empty table. There are many times we simply gave up since we have no time to wait.
Their set menu ranges from RM11-RM18 which includes drink & main course (and salad depend on what you order). Did i mention that they have unlimited scrumptious chili paste on table? Gosh! I love this!
Ramen with Egg
The "3 Meats" Set
The Kare Ramen with BBQ Chicken Set
Their kimchi ramen is particularly awesome but not available in set though - if you have the chance to try, go for the one with katsu chicken! It's only RM15.80, RM1 extra than the one without chicken.
"Plain" Kimchi Ramen
Kimchi Ramen with Katsu Chicken
Dome
Oh, in case you want something more Up-scale, Dome is a good place to go as they serve yummy pie and burger! Quite Pricey though.

A Close Up!!!
Mushroom Pie!
Other than Queensbay mall, I-avenue is another spot that’s full of restaurants. Some of the more obvious choices are Daorae which I love their spicy bean curd soup served with rice as well as Eastern Wishes for exciting tomyam!

There are also some other restaurants such as Red Chopstick – which we felt the quality is sliding low at the moment when we visited during the week. We had the lotus yee mien and lotus fried rice and they tasted so-so only…

Another of our favorite spot for lunch is Ichiyo Japanese Restaurant – unfortunately the restaurant seems always empty whenever we went in! Our absolute favorite is their ‘Don’ series – GyuDon, chicken-don, pork-don, ten-don (price ranges between RM16-RM18) etc… The waiter there actually recognizes us and even jokes with us on our obsession with their ‘Don’. Anyway, if you are a FIZ worker, you get 10% discount for lunch and you get to upgrade your rice from plain rice to garlic rice for FREE!!!!

They always gave us generous portion of the garlic rice as well as the chicken or pork or beef for our “Don” – and it actually tastes superb. If you want value for your money, you’ve got to try this!!! One “Don” makes you full until 7pm for dinner!

Any suggestions for nice lunch in the area? Do drop us some comments so that we can try it out!!! We really do hate to think about “What’s for Lunch?”!
